Tools & Software

:hammer_and_wrench: Tools & Software

A collection of useful privacy, anonymity, security, encryption, and research tools.

Always download software from the official project website whenever possible. Verify signatures or hashes when the project provides them.

:onion: Tor & Anonymous Browsing

  • Tor Browser β€” Privacy-focused browser that routes traffic through the Tor network. The standard choice for accessing .onion services.

  • OnionShare β€” Open-source tool for securely and anonymously sharing files, hosting websites, receiving files, and chatting over the Tor network.

:laptop: Privacy-Focused Operating Systems

  • Tails β€” Portable, amnesic operating system designed to route Internet traffic through Tor and leave minimal traces on the computer after shutdown.

  • Whonix β€” Privacy-focused operating system that separates applications from Tor networking using Whonix-Gateway and Whonix-Workstation virtual machines.

  • Qubes OS β€” Security-focused desktop operating system built around compartmentalization. Different activities can be isolated inside separate virtual machines called qubes.

  • Parrot Security β€” Debian-based Linux distribution designed for cybersecurity, privacy, development, and digital forensics. Parrot also offers a Home Edition for general-purpose use.

:globe_with_meridians: Alternative Privacy & Anonymous Networks

  • I2P β€” Invisible Internet Project β€” Anonymous overlay network designed primarily for services and communication hosted inside the I2P network.

  • Hyphanet β€” Decentralized peer-to-peer platform designed for censorship-resistant publishing and communication. Formerly known as Freenet.

:locked_with_key: Encryption & PGP Tools

  • GnuPG β€” Free and open-source implementation of the OpenPGP standard used for encryption, decryption, digital signatures, and key management.

  • Kleopatra β€” Graphical certificate and encryption-key manager supporting OpenPGP and S/MIME. Useful for users who prefer a GUI for PGP operations.

  • VeraCrypt β€” Open-source disk-encryption software for creating encrypted containers and encrypting partitions or drives.

  • age β€” Modern command-line file-encryption tool designed to provide simple file encryption with fewer configuration options than traditional PGP.

:broom: Metadata & File Privacy

  • ExifTool β€” Powerful command-line utility for viewing, editing, and removing metadata from many different file formats.

  • MAT2 β€” Metadata-removal toolkit designed to remove potentially identifying metadata from files.

  • Metadata Cleaner β€” Graphical metadata-cleaning application based on MAT2. Useful for removing metadata without using the command line.

:magnifying_glass_tilted_right: OSINT & Research

  • OSINT Framework β€” Directory of publicly available tools and resources for Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) research.

  • Have I Been Pwned β€” Allows users to check whether an email address appears in known data breaches.

:shield: Network & Security Tools

  • Wireshark β€” Network protocol analyzer for inspecting and learning how network traffic works.

  • Nmap β€” Open-source network discovery and security auditing tool.

:warning: Important

Downloading a privacy tool does not automatically make you anonymous or secure.

Different tools solve different problems:

  • Tor Browser helps protect your network location while browsing.

  • Tails provides an amnesic Tor-focused environment.

  • Whonix isolates applications from the Tor networking layer.

  • Qubes OS focuses heavily on compartmentalization.

  • VeraCrypt protects stored data through encryption.

  • GnuPG/Kleopatra provide OpenPGP encryption and digital signatures.

  • ExifTool/MAT2 help identify or remove potentially sensitive metadata.

Good OPSEC comes from understanding what each tool protects againstβ€”and what it doesn’t.
