If you’re joining us from Reddit, Discourse may look a little different at first—but the basic idea is very similar. This quick guide will help you get started.

Reading the Community
You can read public topics and Wiki guides without creating an account. However, you’ll generally need an account to:
- Create a new topic
- Reply to discussions
- Like and bookmark posts
- Mention other members
- Receive notifications
- Participate in chat
How to Ask a Question
All questions should be posted in the Questions category.
- Open the Questions category.
- Tap New Topic.
- Give your question a clear, descriptive title.
- Explain the problem and include any relevant details.
- Remove personal information, addresses, usernames, order details, and other sensitive information.
- Tap Create Topic.
Please create a separate topic for each question and don’t post the same question in multiple categories.
Topics and Replies
A topic is the equivalent of a Reddit post. Other members respond by adding replies, similar to Reddit comments.
Unlike Reddit’s heavily nested comment threads, Discourse discussions are generally displayed in chronological order. You can still:
- Reply to a specific person
- Quote part of someone’s message
- Mention members with
@username - Like helpful replies
- Bookmark topics for later
- Follow topics and receive notifications
Categories
Categories organize discussions by subject, much like post flair or separate sections on Reddit. Choose the most relevant category when creating a topic so other members can find it easily.
If you’re unsure where your question belongs, choose the closest category. Staff can move it later if necessary.
Wiki Resources
Our Wiki contains permanent educational resources, including beginner guides, Tor and onion-service information, privacy and OPSEC guidance, PGP tutorials, scam-prevention material, and security tools.
Before asking a common question, check the Wiki or use the search button. Your answer may already be there.
Please Don’t Post Questions in the Wiki
The Wiki is reserved for permanent guides, tutorials, reference material, and other educational resources. Please don’t create questions or general discussion topics there.
If you need help, create a new topic in the Questions category instead. This keeps the Wiki organized and makes it easier for members to find and answer your question.
If a question is posted in the Wiki by mistake, staff may move it to the appropriate category.
Chat Channels
Chat is intended for quick, informal conversation.
- General is the public community chat.
- Staff is private and available only to moderators and administrators.
For technical questions, detailed discussions, or anything that may help future readers, create a forum topic instead. Chat moves quickly and is harder to search later.
Trust Levels
Discourse uses trust levels instead of Reddit karma. Trust levels increase naturally as you read, participate, and contribute constructively.
New members may initially have limits on certain actions. These protections help reduce spam and abuse.
A Few Important Reminders
- Read the community rules before posting.
- Don’t request sources for illegal goods or services.
- Don’t post marketplace advertisements, referral links, or direct-dealing offers.
- Never share personal or identifying information.
- Treat links and private messages with caution.
- Report suspicious content instead of engaging with it.
- Be respectful when asking questions or correcting someone.
